1958 Topps #83 Bob Hazle

About Bob Hazle
Hazle's 1958 Topps card is #83, from the first series, and is his rookie card. It shows him with the Milwaukee Braves, reflecting the 1957 season in which he hit .403 with seven home runs in 41 games after a July call-up from Wichita. In 1958 that magic faded: he was hit in the head by a pitch in spring training, beaned again during the season, and sold to Detroit in May.
Bob Hazle was an outfielder from Laurens and Woodruff, South Carolina, who signed with Cincinnati in 1950 and played parts of three major-league seasons, 1955 and 1957-58, for the Redlegs, Braves and Tigers. Sent to Milwaukee in a 1956 trade, he hurt his knee at Triple-A Wichita and nearly quit. Recalled in late July 1957 to fill in for the injured Bill Bruton, he hit .403 with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 41 games and teammate Eddie Mathews credited him with winning the pennant for Milwaukee. He batted .154 in the World Series, with both hits in the deciding seventh game, and the Braves beat the Yankees. He finished fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting. He was hit in the head by pitches in 1958, was sold to Detroit in May, and retired in 1961. He died in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1992.
