1958 Topps #190 Red Schoendienst

About Red Schoendienst
Albert Fred "Red" Schoendienst (1923-2018), a red-haired second baseman, debuted for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1945 and became one of the era's steadiest infielders. Across a 19-year career with the Cardinals, New York Giants, and Milwaukee Braves, he was a 10-time All-Star and batted .289 with 2,449 hits. He won a World Series with the 1946 Cardinals and another after a 1957 trade to Milwaukee, where his .309 season helped the Braves to the crown; they repeated as NL champions in 1958. A tuberculosis diagnosis and lung surgery in early 1959 interrupted his career, but he returned to play into 1963. Schoendienst went on to manage the Cardinals from 1965 to 1976, winning the 1967 World Series and back-to-back pennants in 1967-68, and remained in the organization for decades afterward. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1989.
