1958 Topps #191 Art Ceccarelli

About Art Ceccarelli
Topps #191 pictures Ceccarelli as a Baltimore Oriole and is his rookie card. It sits in Series 3 of the 494-card 1958 Topps set, on a single-player card between Red Schoendienst at #190 and Milt Graff at #192. The season it reports is 1957, when he went 0-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 games, eight of them starts, covering 58 innings for Baltimore.
Art Ceccarelli was a left-handed pitcher from New Haven, Connecticut, who worked in the majors for the Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs between 1955 and 1960. A star at West Haven High School, he signed a bonus contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948 and struck out 294 batters in the 1949 Georgia-Florida League, a league season record. Korean War service from 1950 through 1952 interrupted his climb. He reached Kansas City in 1955 and finished with a 9-18 record and 5.05 ERA in 79 games, 42 of them starts. His best year was 1959 with the Cubs, when he went 5-5 with four complete games and two shutouts, including a 10-inning 3-0 win over the Dodgers that made him the only left-hander to beat Sandy Koufax in the Coliseum. Ted Williams was his idol. He later taught history and English at Milford and Foran high schools and coached pitchers at Southern Connecticut State. He died in 2012.
