1958 Topps #179 Willy Miranda

About Willy Miranda
Miranda was Baltimore's shortstop again in 1958, playing all 102 of his games there and hitting .201 with one home run and eight RBI. His #179 is a Series Three card in the 1958 Topps set of 494 cards, and it pictures him with the Orioles.
Willy Miranda was a Cuban-born switch-hitting shortstop from Velasco who played in the majors from 1951 to 1959. He was the classic good-field, no-hit shortstop: he hit .221 lifetime, but Tom Lasorda called him the best he ever saw at short. He starred for Almendares in the Cuban winter league and made his big league debut with the Washington Senators on May 6, 1951. He was then passed among the White Sox, Browns and Yankees, and became the first Cuban to play for the Yankees since the World War I era, a dream for a boy who grew up a fan. He was on the 1953 World Series roster but did not play. He then anchored the Baltimore Orioles infield from 1955, when he led the American League in double plays, and Orioles manager Paul Richards credited him with helping save the franchise in its early years. He fielded with a battered, patched glove he called Old Faithful. He died in Baltimore in 1996 at 70.
