About Jim Busby

Busby's 1958 Topps card is #28, part of the first series (#1-88) of a 494-card set, and shows him with the Baltimore Orioles. He played 113 games for Baltimore that year, mostly in the outfield, but batted only 215 times and hit .237 with 3 home runs and 19 RBI. 1957 had been his last year as a regular, and by now he was a defensive replacement. He also appears on a Billy Klaus, Jim Busby and Larry Jackson salesman sample.

Jim Busby was a right-handed center fielder from Kenedy, Texas, who played football, baseball and track at Texas Christian University before signing with the White Sox in 1948. He won the Chicago job in 1951, stole 26 bases, made the American League All-Star team and became one of the early Go-Go Sox. Traded to Washington, he hit a career-best .312 in 1953 and drove in 80 or more runs in both 1953 and 1954. Known for sprinter's speed and a glove that covered vast outfields, he later played for Cleveland, Baltimore, Boston and the Houston Colt .45's, retiring in 1962 with a .262 average, 48 home runs and 97 steals over 1,352 games. He then coached for Houston, Atlanta, the White Sox and Seattle through 1978, and died in 1996.
