1958 Topps #27 Bud Freeman

About Bud Freeman
Freeman's 1958 Topps #27 shows him as a Cincinnati Redlegs pitcher and was issued in Series One, the first series of a 494-card set. It follows a 1957 season of 52 relief games and a 7-2 record, when his ERA rose to 4.52. He opened 1958 with Cincinnati, then was traded to the Cubs for Turk Lown in May. He finished 0-1 with a 6.53 ERA in 12 games.
Hersh Freeman was a right-handed reliever from Gadsden, Alabama, who pitched in 204 major league games, all but three in relief, between 1952 and 1958. He attended the University of Alabama and signed with the Red Sox in 1948. In September 1952 he threw a 3-1 complete-game win over Washington, his only complete game. Boston let him go in May 1955, and Cincinnati acquired him. Manager Birdie Tebbetts used him in 54, 64 and 52 games over the next three seasons. His best year was 1956, when he went 14-5 with 18 saves and led the National League in games finished, and he placed in the National League MVP voting. Tebbetts called him the most valuable pitcher in the league in 1957. He was traded to the Cubs for Turk Lown in May 1958, and his last big league game came on June 7 that year. He finished 30-16 with 37 saves and a 3.74 ERA. He later scouted for the Reds and managed in their farm system from 1961 to 1963.
