1958 Topps #214 Willard Schmidt

About Willard Schmidt
Schmidt spent 1958 in his first season with Cincinnati after the trade that also brought Curt Flood to St. Louis. Used almost entirely in relief, he appeared in 41 games with two starts, going 3-5 with a 2.86 ERA over 69 1/3 innings. His 1958 Topps #214 card, with Cincinnati, is part of the third series and sits between Red Wilson and Jim Gilliam.
Willard Schmidt was a right-handed pitcher from Hays, Kansas, whose four grandparents were Volga Germans. He reached the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1952 and pitched for them in 1952-53 and 1955-57, working as a starter and a reliever. His best year was 1957, when he went 10-3 and led National League pitchers in winning percentage at .769. He moved to the Cincinnati Redlegs in the same transaction that brought Curt Flood to St. Louis, and pitched for Cincinnati in 1958 and 1959, mostly out of the bullpen. His last game was in September 1959. In seven seasons he went 31-29 with a 3.93 ERA and 323 strikeouts in 194 appearances, 55 of them starts. He was inducted into the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 and died in Newcastle, Oklahoma, in 2007.
