1958 Topps #157 Dee Fondy

About Dee Fondy
Fondy's 1958 Topps #157 shows him with the Cincinnati Redlegs, who acquired him from Pittsburgh in December 1957 in a swap for Ted Kluszewski. It was issued in Series Two of a 494-card set, and it follows his .313 season of 1957. In 1958 George Crowe took over first base, Fondy moved to the outfield, and he hit .218 in 89 games.
Dee Fondy was a left-handed first baseman, 6 ft 3 in and 195 pounds, who played in the majors from 1951 to 1958. He came up in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization out of Fort Worth, but Gil Hodges blocked his path at first base. Fondy served in the U.S. Army in World War II and landed at Utah Beach in Normandy in 1944. He opened his big league career by hitting a bases-loaded triple in his first at-bat on opening day 1951 for the Cubs, and he stayed with the Cubs through 1956, hitting .300 in 1952 and .309 in 1953 with 18 home runs. In January 1957 he was sent to Pittsburgh, and he led the National League batting race in early June on his way to a .313 season. He later played for Cincinnati, and he finished with 1,000 hits and a .286 career average. He was the last man to bat at Ebbets Field, grounding out on September 24, 1957. After playing, he scouted for the Mets and Brewers and signed Paul Molitor.
