About Dick Hyde

Dick Hyde's #156 shows him with the Washington Senators, in the second series of 1958 Topps. It follows his first full big-league year, 1957, when he worked 52 games out of the bullpen with a 4-3 record and a 4.12 ERA. The submarine-style right-hander then pitched his way into prominence in the 1958 season the card was issued for. Hector Lopez is #155 just ahead of him.

Richard Elde Hyde was a right-handed relief pitcher from Hindsboro, Illinois, who went to Cubs and Cardinals tryout camps in 1947 before signing with the Washington Senators in 1949. After military service in Korea he made little progress until Calvin Griffith suggested he come down a little in his pitching motion, and Hyde eventually adopted a submarine style. He pitched three times for Washington in 1955, spent 1956 in the minors, and established himself in 1957. His best year was 1958, when he went 10-3 with 18 saves and a 1.75 ERA and finished 12th in the American League Most Valuable Player voting. He was sold to the Baltimore Orioles in July 1960 and finished his major league career there in 1961, then ended his playing days in the Orioles farm system in 1962. Of his 169 big league games, all but two were in relief. His son Rich Hyde also pitched professionally.
