About Bud Byerly
Bud Byerly is #72 in the first series of the 1958 Topps set, a 494-card issue, shown with the Washington Senators and listed between the Los Angeles Dodgers team card and Pete Daley. His 1957 season for Washington: 47 games, all in relief, 33 of them as closer, a 6-6 record and 3.13 ERA. In 1958 he was 2-0 for the Senators before a June 24 trade sent him to Boston for left-hander Jack Spring.
Eldred William "Bud" Byerly was a 6-foot-2 right-hander from Webster Groves, Missouri, signed by his hometown Cardinals after his high school coach arranged a tryout. He debuted in September 1943 and pitched for St. Louis through 1945, working one and a third innings of the 1944 World Series, which the Cardinals won over the Browns. Four years in the minors followed, then brief stays with the Reds from 1950 to 1952 and another long run through the minor leagues before the Washington Senators bought his contract in 1956. In Washington he became a dependable reliever, closing 33 games in 1957. He later pitched for Boston and the San Francisco Giants, finishing in 1960 with a 22-22 record, a 3.70 ERA and 14 saves over 237 games. Teammate Whitey Herzog recalled that Byerly always claimed he threw a dry spitter. He managed Eugene in 1962, then worked in construction.
