1958 Topps #109 Herb Plews

About Herb Plews
Card #109 comes from the second series and pictures Plews with the Washington Senators. He set a career high with 111 games in 1958, batting .258 with 2 home runs and 29 RBI, both homers off Detroit's Jim Bunning. He took over at third base from Eddie Yost in May, then finished as the regular second baseman, and he joined in five double plays in one game on September 26, tying an American League record.
Herb Plews was a left-handed-hitting second baseman from Montana, who captained the University of Illinois team, was its most valuable player as a sophomore and led the Big Nine in batting. He signed with the New York Yankees in 1950, lost time to a fractured skull from a pitch and to Army service in Japan during the Korean War, and hit close to .300 at Norfolk, Birmingham and Denver. A trade after the 1955 season sent him to the Washington Senators, where he debuted on April 18, 1956, and played four major league seasons, splitting time between second and third base. He was a glove-first infielder, with a .967 lifetime fielding percentage at second base, and always wore eyeglasses, which earned him colorful descriptions from Washington Post columnist Bob Addie. Sent to the Red Sox in June 1959, he played his last big league game that July. In 346 games he hit .262 with four home runs and 82 RBI. He played in the minors through 1965, then worked in cement plants. Plews was one of the inaugural members of the Helena Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and joined the Helena Senators Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.
