1958 Topps #219 Camilo Pascual

About Camilo Pascual
Camilo Pascual's 1958 Topps #219 belongs to print series 3 and shows the Cuban right-hander with the Washington Senators. It follows his 1957 season, when he started 26 of 29 games and worked 175.2 innings with 113 strikeouts, but finished 8-17 with a 4.10 ERA. Collectors know him by the nicknames Camile and Little Potato.
Camilo Pascual, a right-handed pitcher born in Havana on January 20, 1934, signed with the Washington Senators before the 1952 season after a summer in the Sooner State, Longhorn and Border leagues. He learned his signature overhand curveball from Cuban pitching legend Adolfo Luque, his winter-ball manager at Marianao. Pascual reached the majors on April 15, 1954 and spent five years losing for some of the weakest Senators clubs of the era before breaking through at 17-10 in 1959. He then led the American League in strikeouts three straight seasons, won 20 games twice, and finished a seven-time All-Star. Ted Williams called his the most feared curveball in the American League for 18 years, and the pitch is still rated among the best the game has produced. Across 18 seasons with Washington, Minnesota, the expansion Senators, Cincinnati, Los Angeles and Cleveland he went 174-170 with 2,167 strikeouts and 36 shutouts. Cooperstown never called, but he belongs to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame and, since 2012, the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame. He later served as the Twins pitching coach and spent decades as an international scout, signing talent out of Venezuela and beyond.
