About the 1958 Washington Senators
The Washington Senators brought up the American League's rear in 1957, finishing last at 55-99. The franchise did have real power: outfielder-first baseman Roy Sievers led the entire American League that year with 42 home runs and 114 RBI. The more consequential long-term story was developing quietly - young third baseman Harmon Killebrew, who played only a combined 22 games for Washington across 1957 and 1958 while shuttling between the majors and minors. Killebrew would erupt in 1959 with 42 home runs to share the league lead, launching a Hall of Fame career. Like every 1958 Topps team card, #44 carries a series checklist on its back, a feature Topps introduced that year.
