About Art Schult

Schult's 1957 was his one full big-league year, and he split it between Cincinnati and Washington, playing 21 games for the Redlegs and 77 for the Senators. This Series 1 card, #58, shows him with Washington, and it comes in two versions. The common one has the team name in white lettering, while the scarcer Yellow Team version prints the club name in yellow. Both carry the same #58.

Art Schult was a Brooklyn-born outfielder and first baseman, 6 feet 3 inches and 210 pounds, who batted and threw right-handed. He attended Georgetown University and was signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1948. He then spent ten seasons in the minor leagues and hit 136 home runs there. His major league time was brief. He played 164 games over parts of five seasons for the Yankees, Cincinnati Redlegs, Washington Senators and Chicago Cubs, and he got into seven games with New York in 1953 without an official at-bat. His only full big-league season was 1957, split between Cincinnati and Washington, when he hit a career-high four home runs and drove in 39. He finished with 111 hits, 24 of them doubles, plus six homers and a .264 average, and he retired after the 1960 campaign. Schult died in 2014 at the age of 86.
