1958 Topps #188 Milt Bolling

About Milt Bolling
Topps issued Bolling as #188 in its third series of 1958, a 494-card set, and the card shows him with the Washington Senators. His 1957 season, split between Boston and Washington after an April trade, came to 92 games and a .227 average, mostly at second base and shortstop. By the time the card reached packs he had already been dealt to Detroit, where he played beside his brother Frank, whose own card is #95. Sandy Koufax sits next door at #187.
Milt Bolling was a right-handed shortstop born in Mississippi City, Mississippi, and raised in Mobile, Alabama, where he starred at McGill Institute in baseball and basketball. He signed with the Boston Red Sox at 17 after scout George Digby's persistent recruiting, and promised his mother he would attend college in the off-season. He debuted in September 1952 and won the starting shortstop job in 1953, prized for his glove and range more than his bat. A torn ankle ligament hurt his throwing, and an elbow injury in spring training 1955 cost him most of that season and his job to Don Buddin. Boston traded him to Washington in April 1957, and he finished with Detroit in 1958, briefly teaming with his younger brother Frank in the Tigers' middle infield. He retired at 27 with a .241 average in 400 games, then spent more than 30 years with the Red Sox as an executive assistant and Alabama area scout. He died in Mobile in 2013.
