About Sandy Koufax

Sanford "Sandy" Koufax (born 1935) grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and signed with his hometown Dodgers as a "bonus baby" in 1954, debuting in 1955. Wild and inconsistent early on, he went 36-40 with persistent control problems through 1960, a struggle still evident in 1958, the Dodgers' first season in Los Angeles. Then he transformed: from 1962 through 1966 Koufax was the game's most dominant pitcher, leading the National League in ERA all five years, throwing four no-hitters (including a 1965 perfect game), and winning three Cy Young Awards plus the 1963 MVP. He won four World Series with the Dodgers and two Series MVPs, and famously sat out Game 1 of the 1965 Series because it fell on Yom Kippur. Arthritis forced his retirement after 1966 at just 30. He finished 165-87 with a 2.76 ERA and in 1972 became the youngest player ever elected to the Hall of Fame.
