1958 Topps #93 Sandy Amoros

About Sandy Amoros
Topps #93 pictures Sandy Amoros as a Los Angeles Dodger in the second series of the 1958 set. It follows the 1957 season he spent with Brooklyn: 106 games, a .277 average, 7 home runs and 26 RBI in 238 at-bats, after his 16-homer season the year before. In the 494-card set, #93 sits in the same run as Bob Skinner at #94 and Frank Bolling at #95.
Edmundo "Sandy" Amoros was a Cuban left fielder, five feet seven and 170 pounds, who batted and threw left-handed. Dodgers scout Al Campanis signed him after he starred in Cuba and with the New York Cubans of the Negro leagues, and he debuted with Brooklyn in August 1952. He became the club's regular left fielder in 1955, hitting .247 with 10 home runs, and posted his best big-league year in 1956 with 16 homers and 58 RBI in 292 at-bats. His on-base percentage ran well above his batting average because he drew many walks. His defining moment came in Game 7 of the 1955 World Series, when, entering as a defensive replacement, he ran down Yogi Berra's drive near the left-field line and helped turn a double play, protecting a 2-0 lead as Brooklyn won its only championship. He appeared briefly with the Dodgers in 1959, split his final season, 1960, between Los Angeles and Detroit, and finished with 43 home runs in 517 games. Hard times followed his conflict with Fidel Castro's government. He died in Miami in 1992.
