About Dick Gray

Dick Gray's 1958 Topps card is #146, a Series Two card and a rookie card, showing him with the Los Angeles Dodgers. It follows the unissued #145 slot in the numbering. The season behind it was his big-league debut year: 58 games, a .249 average, nine home runs and 30 RBIs, with 55 of those games at third base for the newly relocated Dodgers.

Dick Gray was a right-handed third baseman from Jefferson, Pennsylvania, who signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949 and worked up through the minors, losing two years to Army service at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where a teammate nicknamed him Chief Pontiac. He put up a career-best .297 average and 111 RBIs for Triple-A St. Paul in 1957, then won the Dodgers' third base job for their first season in Los Angeles. In the opening week he hit the first home run in Los Angeles Dodgers history at San Francisco's Seals Stadium, and two days later the first Dodger homer at the Coliseum. The hot start faded, he was sent down, and he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in June 1959. He played his last major league game in 1960 with a .239 average, 12 home runs and 41 RBIs in 124 games, then finished in Triple-A in 1962. He later worked for the Buena Park School District and was inducted into the Washington-Greene County Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
