About Bobby Morgan
Morgan's 1957 season was split between the Phillies and the Cubs, who bought him in May; he hit .207 with five home runs in 127 games, playing mostly second base. He appeared in one game for Chicago in April 1958, his last in the majors. His card is #144 in the second series of the 494-card 1958 Topps set, shown with the Cubs.
Bobby Morgan was an infielder from Oklahoma City who signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers after graduating from Classen High School in 1944, then served in Europe in World War II. In 1949 he was the Triple-A International League's most valuable player, batting .337 with 112 runs batted in for Montreal. He reached Brooklyn in 1950 as a utility man behind Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson and Billy Cox, and pinch hit in the 1952 and 1953 World Series. Traded to the Phillies in March 1954, he became their starting shortstop and set career highs with 119 hits, 14 home runs, 50 runs batted in and a .262 average. He later played for the Cardinals and Cubs, finishing with 487 hits, 53 home runs and a .233 average over eight seasons ending in 1958. He kept playing in the minors through 1963, managed in the Phillies farm system from 1964 to 1966, and scouted for the Orioles, Royals and Twins. He died in Oklahoma City in 2023 at age 96.
