About Jim Bolger

Bolger spent 1958 with the Chicago Cubs, appearing in 84 games with 120 at-bats, a .225 average, one home run and 11 runs batted in, after hitting .275 in 112 games the year before. His 1958 Topps card is #201, a single-player card showing him with the Cubs, in the third series of the 494-card set. It sits between Bob Keegan at #200 and Woodie Held at #202. He would play his last big-league games in 1959, splitting that season between Cleveland and Philadelphia.

James Cyril Bolger was born February 23, 1932, in Cincinnati and went to Purcell Marian High School before signing with his hometown Reds in 1950. A 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed outfielder, he was traded to Buffalo in October 1951 for pitchers Moe Savransky and Tom Acker. In 1956 he was a Pacific Coast League all-star with the Los Angeles Angels, hitting .326 with 193 hits, 28 home runs and 147 runs batted in. He reached his big-league peak in 1957 as the Chicago Cubs' fourth outfielder, batting .275 in 112 games. Across seven seasons he played 312 games, 260 of them for the Cubs, with short stops in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Philadelphia, finishing at .229 with 140 hits and six home runs. His 13-year professional career ended in 1962 with Triple-A Louisville, where he hit .319. He died April 9, 2020, at age 88.
