About Chuck Tanner

Tanner spent 1958 with the Chicago Cubs, hitting .262 with four home runs in 73 games, mostly off the bench; his 53 pinch-hitting at-bats led the National League. Card #91 in the second series of Topps' 494-card set pictures him with the Cubs, in the run of numbers just after Billy Klaus and Robin Roberts.

Chuck Tanner was a left-handed outfielder from New Castle, Pennsylvania, who signed with the Boston Braves in 1946 and hit over .300 in the minors every year from 1947 through 1954. He reached Milwaukee in 1955 and homered on the first major-league pitch he saw, as a pinch-hitter on Opening Day. Over eight seasons with the Braves, Cubs, Indians and Angels he hit .261 with 21 home runs in 396 games. His larger fame came as a manager. After eight years leading Angels farm clubs, he took over the White Sox in 1970, and in 1972 he won Manager of the Year honors and guided them to second place. He then managed Oakland and, after an unusual trade that sent Manny Sanguillen and cash to Oakland, Pittsburgh, where the 1979 Pirates, adopting We Are Family as their theme, rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Baltimore in the World Series. He finished with 1,352 wins over 19 seasons, and was known as baseball's Mr. Sunshine for his optimism.
