Robin Roberts - 1958 Topps #90
1958 Topps #90 Robin Roberts

About Robin Roberts
Robin Roberts signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1948 after pitching for a semipro team in Vermont, and the right-hander quickly became one of the era's premier workhorses. He anchored the Phillies' rotation from 1948 to 1961, later pitching for the Baltimore Orioles, Houston, and the Cubs through 1966. A seven-time All-Star (1950-1956), Roberts was the ace of the 1950 "Whiz Kids," winning 20 games and clinching Philadelphia's first pennant in 35 years with a ten-inning victory over Brooklyn on the final day. He led the National League in wins four straight years (1952-1955) and posted six consecutive 20-win seasons. Famous for his stamina, he once completed 28 straight starts among his 305 career complete games; teammate Curt Simmons compared him to "a diesel engine-the more you used him, the better he ran." Roberts retired with 286 wins and 2,357 strikeouts and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976.
