About Richie Ashburn

Richie Ashburn signed with the Philadelphia Phillies and made his professional debut in 1945, reaching the majors in 1948 as a speedy, high-average center fielder. Over twelve seasons with the Phillies (1948-1959), followed by stints with the Cubs and the expansion Mets, he won two National League batting titles, hitting .338 in 1955 and .350 in 1958. A multiple-time All-Star, Ashburn batted .308 lifetime with 2,574 hits and ranks among the finest defensive center fielders ever, third all-time in career putouts. Teammates dubbed him "Whitey" for his light-blond hair, while Ted Williams nicknamed him "Putt-Putt," saying he ran "as if he had an outboard motor in the seat of his pants." A catalyst for the 1950 "Whiz Kids," Ashburn threw out Cal Abrams at home plate in the season finale to preserve the tie that set up the pennant-clinching homer. He later spent 34 years as a beloved Phillies broadcaster and entered the Hall of Fame in 1995.
