About the 1958 Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies played to a .500 record in 1957, going 77-77 to finish fifth in the National League. The club leaned on two stars. Right-hander Robin Roberts was the workhorse ace of the era, a durable innings-eater and repeat 20-game winner. Center fielder Richie Ashburn ranked among the game's finest contact hitters and leadoff men; in 1958 he captured his second National League batting title, having also won in 1955. The reverse of card #134 carries a series checklist - 1958 was the first year Topps printed checklists on the backs of team cards, a feature that makes them especially popular with set collectors.
