1958 Topps #36 Ted Kazanski

About Ted Kazanski
Kazanski's 1958 Topps card is #36, a single-player card in Series One, the opening block of #1 to #88, and it shows him with the Phillies. That season he played 95 games, mostly at second base (59 games) and shortstop (22), and hit .228 with three home runs and 35 RBI. It was his last year in the majors.
Ted Kazanski was a right-handed infielder from Hamtramck, Michigan, and one of the top schoolboy prospects of his day. He signed with the Phillies in 1951 for a reported $100,000 bonus and reached the majors in 1953 at age 19. In his debut he went 3-for-6 with four RBI in a 13-2 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the first shortstop since 1920 to drive in four runs in a debut, according to Elias. Known as a slick-fielding slap hitter, he played six seasons, all with Philadelphia, and hit .217 with 14 home runs and 116 RBI in 417 games. His best year was 1956, with career highs of 117 games, four homers, 34 RBI and 80 hits, including an inside-the-park grand slam on August 8 in a game where he also started a triple play. He was sent to the Braves organization in 1959 and finished in the minors in 1964, then coached in the Tigers system.
