1958 Topps #48 Chuck Harmon

About Chuck Harmon
Topps #48 shows Harmon with the Philadelphia Phillies, the club he finished 1957 with after a May trade from the Cardinals; he hit .258 that year and played his last major league game in September. The card is in the first series (#1-88) of a 494-card set. In 1958 he was assigned to the Phillies' Triple-A club at Miami.
Chuck Harmon, the tenth of twelve children, grew up in Washington, Indiana, and starred in basketball first, helping Washington High School win Indiana state titles in 1941 and 1942 before playing at the University of Toledo. After Navy service during World War II he signed with the St. Louis Browns system and hit .300 or better in five straight minor league seasons. On April 17, 1954, he pinch-hit for the Cincinnati Redlegs at Milwaukee and became the first African American to play for the Reds. The right-handed utility man appeared at third base, first base and the outfield, and earned the nickname "The Glove" for carrying a special glove for each position. Over four big league seasons with Cincinnati, St. Louis and Philadelphia he hit .238 with seven home runs and 59 RBI in 289 games, and he played his last game on September 15, 1957. He then played in the minors through 1961, scouted for the Indians and Braves, and worked for years in the Hamilton County courts in Cincinnati. Honors include the University of Toledo Athletic Hall of Fame (1977), the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame (1995) and the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame (2014).
