About Warren Hacker
1958 was Hacker's last season in the National League. He pitched in nine games for Philadelphia, going 0-1 with a 7.41 ERA over 17 innings, after splitting 1957 between Cincinnati and the Phillies. Warren Hacker was a right-handed pitcher from Marissa, Illinois, who spent most of his career with the Chicago Cubs, debuting in 1948. His best season was 1952, when he went 15-9 with a 2.58 ERA, 12 complete games and five shutouts, led the National League in WHIP and finished 23rd in Most Valuable Player voting. He worked heavily as a starter for the Cubs through 1956, including a 12-19 year in 1953, and then moved to the Cincinnati Redlegs and Philadelphia Phillies in 1957. After time out of the majors he returned in 1961 as a reliever with the Chicago White Sox, saving eight games. Hacker finished 62-89 with a 4.21 ERA in 306 games. He pitched for the Indianapolis Indians from 1962 to 1965, calling those years maybe the best days he ever had in baseball, and later coached pitchers in the Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres systems. He was the uncle of major league shortstop Rich Hacker and died in Lenzburg, Illinois, in 2002.
