1958 Topps #64 Joe Lonnett

About Joe Lonnett
Lonnett's 1958 Topps card, #64, has him with the Philadelphia Phillies, coming off a 1957 season in which he set a career high with 160 at-bats and a .997 fielding percentage that led National League catchers with 200 or more putouts. It sits in Series One, the opening run of #1 to #88 in the 494-card set.
Joe Lonnett was a right-handed catcher from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Released as an outfielder in 1947, he switched behind the plate at the suggestion of a Phillies minor-league manager and spent 22 years with the Phillies organization in many roles. Military service in the Navy and Army, plus knee and finger injuries, delayed his arrival, and he reached Philadelphia in 1956. He played four seasons as a backup, 143 games in all, hitting .166 with six home runs and 27 RBI. His 1957 season was his best, with a career-high 160 at-bats and a .997 fielding percentage that led National League catchers with 200 or more putouts. After playing he scouted and managed in the Phillies system, then joined old friend Chuck Tanner's staffs as a coach with the White Sox, Athletics and Pirates, working third base on Pittsburgh's 1979 champions. Teammates called him Fred Flintstone. He was inducted into the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame in 1980 and died in Beaver Falls in 2011.
