1958 Topps #231 Lloyd Merritt

About Lloyd Merritt
Merritt's rookie card #231 belongs to Series 3 and lists him with the St. Louis Cardinals. It reflects his 1957 debut season, when he led the club with 44 relief appearances and went 1-2 with a 3.31 ERA, 35 strikeouts and 65 1/3 innings as the Cardinals stayed in the pennant race into August. No variation of the card is catalogued.
Lloyd Merritt was born and raised in St. Louis, about a mile and a half from Sportsman's Park, and starred at Beaumont High School. At 17 he pitched his Stockham American Legion team to the national championship game. He signed with the Yankees in 1951 and won 20 games at Norfolk in 1953 after manager Mickey Owen reworked his delivery into a side-arm sinkerball style. Army service cost him nearly two years, and the St. Louis Cardinals took him in the December 1956 Rule 5 draft. In 1957 he made the Cardinals bullpen and led the staff with 44 relief appearances, going 1-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 65 1/3 innings. That was his only major league season, and he was a right-hander who threw to contact. Merritt attended Washington University in St. Louis, and after two decades away he returned to the Cardinals organization as a minor league manager in the early 1980s and also scouted for two other clubs.
