About Walt Moryn

Walt Moryn's 1958 Topps #122 comes from the second series and lists him with the Chicago Cubs. It follows 1957, when the left-handed-hitting outfielder known as Moose batted .289 with 19 home runs and 88 RBI in 149 games. He told the Chicago Tribune in 1958 that he was happy when the Dodgers traded him to the Cubs, though he felt he had been ready before 1956.

Walter Joseph "Moose" Moryn, born April 12, 1926, in St. Paul, Minnesota, was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent eight seasons in the major leagues from 1954 through 1961. A Navy gunner's mate who served on an ammunition ship in the Pacific during World War II, he was signed out of an August 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers tryout camp in his hometown on scout Andy High's recommendation, and he reached the majors with Brooklyn on June 29, 1954. Traded to the Chicago Cubs in December 1955, Moryn roamed the Cubs outfield from 1956 to 1960, hitting 82 home runs over his four seasons as a regular from 1956 through 1959 and earning a place on the 1958 National League All-Star squad, though he did not get into the game. His signature moment came on May 15, 1960, when he charged in and caught Joe Cunningham's low liner to left field ankle-high for the final out of Don Cardwell's no-hitter at Wrigley Field. A month later he was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals, and he closed out his career in 1961 with the Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Over 785 games he batted .266 with 101 home runs and 354 RBIs. He died of a heart attack on July 21, 1996, in Winfield, Illinois.
