1958 Topps #123 Dick Tomanek

About Dick Tomanek
Tomanek began 1958 in Cleveland's bullpen, and on June 15 he went to Kansas City with Roger Maris and Preston Ward for Woodie Held and Vic Power. He finished 7-8 with a 4.50 ERA, five saves and 92 strikeouts in 54 appearances. His Topps card, #123 in the second series of a 494-card set, shows him with the Indians and is his rookie card.
Left-hander Dick Tomanek grew up in Avon Lake, Ohio, and signed with his hometown-area Cleveland Indians at 19 in 1950. Marine Corps service cost him all of 1951 and part of 1952. After a 13-8 season at Triple-A Indianapolis in 1953, he was called up and won his debut on September 25 with a 12-3 complete game over Detroit. A sore elbow, diagnosed as curve ball pitching disease, then sent him back to the minors, and he did not return to Cleveland for more than three years. He worked as a reliever and spot starter in 1957 and 1958, was traded to Kansas City in 1958, and pitched his last major-league game in September 1959. His big-league line reads 10-10 with a 4.95 ERA over 106 games. After baseball he worked for B.F. Goodrich Chemical Company until retiring in 1990.
