1958 Topps #102 George Strickland

About George Strickland
Strickland did not play in 1958. New manager Bobby Bragan was in place, his playing time had shrunk to 89 games in 1957, and he asked to go on the voluntarily retired list, selling sporting goods in New Orleans while Woody Held was turned into the Indians' shortstop. His card #102 sits in the second series of Topps' 494-card set, pictured with Cleveland.
George Strickland was a New Orleans shortstop known for his glove rather than his bat. He starred at S.J. Peters High School, signed with the hometown Pelicans in 1943, and spent 16 months in the Navy on Saipan before returning to the minors. Pittsburgh took him in the Rule 5 draft, and he was the Pirates' starting shortstop in 1951, when he hit .216 and made 37 errors, second only to Alvin Dark's 45. Cleveland acquired him in August 1952, and he became the Indians' regular shortstop, turning 103 double plays in 1953, his best year at the plate at .284, and leading big-league shortstops in fielding percentage in 1955. He started for the 1954 pennant winners, who won 111 games, though the Indians were swept by the New York Giants in the World Series. Over ten seasons he hit .224 with 36 home runs in 971 games. He later coached for Cleveland, Minnesota and Kansas City, and twice filled in as Indians manager, in 1964 and 1966. He was inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
