Series Three of the 1958 Topps set, a 494-card issue, puts Caffie at #182 as a Cleveland Indians outfielder, a single-player card and a recognised rookie card. It follows his 1957 trial with the Tribe: 32 games, a .270 average, three home runs and 10 runs batted in. During 1958 itself he played for Triple-A Buffalo, batting .295.
Joe Caffie was an outfielder born in Ramer, Alabama, who batted left-handed and threw right-handed. His 12-year career began in the Negro leagues with the Cleveland Buckeyes of the Negro American League in 1950, and the Cleveland Indians signed him in 1951. He spent most of his career in the minors, including three strong seasons with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, where he won the International League batting title in 1957 and made its All-Star team. In the majors he appeared in 44 games for the Indians across 1956 and 1957, batting .291 with 37 hits, three home runs, 11 runs batted in and three stolen bases. He finished in the minor leagues in 1961 and died in 2011 in Warren, Ohio.
