1958 Topps #183 Dave Jolly

About Dave Jolly
Jolly's 1958 Topps card is #183, a single-player card in Series Three, the block that runs from #177 to #264. It shows him with the San Francisco Giants, who bought his contract from Milwaukee on October 15, 1957, a month after his last game with the Braves, a September 14 outing against the Dodgers. The card is a snapshot of that winter move, and the Giants' first West Coast season came without him on the mound.
Dave Jolly was a right-handed reliever from Stony Point, North Carolina, who reached the majors at 28 after a long minor-league climb through the Browns, Reds and Yankees systems and a wartime Army stint in France and Germany. Drafted by the Boston Braves in December 1952, he pitched for Milwaukee from 1953 to 1957 and finished with a 16-14 record, 19 saves and a 3.77 ERA in 159 games. His best year was 1954, when he went 11-6 with 10 saves and a 2.43 ERA and made his only big-league start, ten innings against Brooklyn. Calm on the mound, he was nicknamed Gabby by bullpen mate Ernie Johnson, a joke on his quiet nature. He hit .292 for his career, including one home run off Curt Simmons. He was on the Braves' 1957 World Series champions but did not appear in the Series, and he died in 1963 at 38.
