1958 Topps #21 Curt Barclay

About Curt Barclay
Card #21 in the first series of the 1958 Topps set, a 494-card issue, shows Barclay with the San Francisco Giants; the checklist prints the name as Curt Balay. It sits between Gil McDougald at #20 and Hal Naragon at #22. Coming off his 1957 season in New York, he made just six appearances for the Giants in 1958 and went 1-0 with a 2.81 ERA over 16 innings, hampered by a sore shoulder that had him splitting the year between San Francisco and Phoenix.
Curtis Cordell Barclay was a 6 ft 3 in, 210 pound right-handed pitcher born in Chicago on August 22, 1931. He attended the University of Oregon, where he played baseball and basketball, and signed with the Giants in 1952. In three minor league seasons he won 19, 16 and 15 games, losing 11 each year, before reaching the majors with the New York Giants in 1957. That was his only full big league season: 37 games, 28 of them starts, a 9-9 record and a 3.44 earned run average that led the club's starters. He threw two shutouts that year, back-to-back blankings of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies in August, the only shutouts of his career. A sore shoulder then slowed him, and he split 1958 and 1959 between San Francisco and the Phoenix Giants. He retired after the 1960 minor league season with a major league record of 10-9, 3.48, and 73 strikeouts in 199 1/3 innings across 44 games. Barclay died of cancer at 53 in Missoula, Montana, on March 25, 1985.
