About the 1958 San Francisco Giants
Card #19's front still reads 'New York Giants,' a relic of timing: the franchise had just relocated to San Francisco for the 1958 season - its first on the West Coast, alongside the Dodgers' simultaneous move to Los Angeles - yet Topps printed the old New York name. The reverse carries a series checklist, as 1958 was the first year Topps team cards doubled as checklists. On the field, the Giants were coming off a 69-85, sixth-place finish in their final New York season. Center fielder Willie Mays remained the cornerstone, and rookie first baseman Orlando Cepeda announced himself by winning the 1958 National League Rookie of the Year Award, giving the transplanted club a fresh star for its California debut.
