Whitey Lockman, a left-handed hitter from Lowell, North Carolina, signed with the New York Giants at 16 and homered in his first major-league at-bat in July 1945, still the youngest player to do so. After Army service and a broken ankle in the spring of 1947, he became a Giants regular, playing outfield and first base. His line-drive double in the ninth inning on October 3, 1951 knocked out Don Newcombe and set up Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard 'Round the World. He played in the 1951 and 1954 World Series, the latter a Giants sweep of Cleveland, and started at first base in the 1952 All-Star Game. Over 1,666 games he hit .279 with 114 home runs and 563 RBI, finishing with the Orioles and Reds in 1959 and 1960. He then coached for the Reds and Giants and managed the Cubs from July 1972 to July 1974, going 157-162. He later worked in Cubs, Expos and Marlins front offices and scouting, retiring in 2001.
