1958 Topps #136 Jim Finigan

About Jim Finigan
Finigan's 1958 season with the San Francisco Giants was a brief one: 23 games, a .200 average in 25 at-bats and 1 RBI, with time at second base and third. He had spent 1957 with the Detroit Tigers and would finish with Baltimore in 1959, playing his last big league game on July 5 of that year. This is card #136, printed in the second series of 1958 Topps, sitting between Moe Drabowsky at #135 and Russ Kemmerer at #137. Topps issued 494 cards in the set.
Jim Finigan was a right-handed infielder from Quincy, Illinois, who played six major league seasons, mostly at third base and second base. Signed by the Yankees system in 1948, he lost two years to Army service in the Korean War before an 11-player trade sent him to the Philadelphia Athletics in December 1953. He hit .302 as the 1954 regular at third, finished second to Bob Grim in American League Rookie of the Year voting, and made the All-Star team. He was an All-Star again in 1955, the Athletics' first year in Kansas City, and started the game at third base. A second-half slump followed, and failing eyesight was later cited as a cause; he wore glasses afterward. His playing time shrank with Detroit, San Francisco and Baltimore. He finished with 512 games, 422 hits, 19 home runs and a .264 average, and died in Quincy in 1981.
