About Mike Garcia

Garcia's 1958 season was lost almost at once. He slipped on a wet mound in a spring training game and hurt his back, did not pitch until April 27, and had surgery in June for a herniated disc. He finished 1-0 in six games and eight innings for Cleveland, by then the last of the Big Four. His card is 1958 Topps #196, in the third series of a 494-card set, shown as a Cleveland Indian.

Mike Garcia was a right-handed pitcher born in San Gabriel, California, and raised on a ranch in Orosi. A Cleveland scout signed him out of semipro ball, and after three years in the Army Signal Corps he worked up through the minors and debuted with the Indians in October 1948. In 1949 he led the American League with a 2.36 ERA. From 1949 to 1954 he was one of the Indians' celebrated starters alongside Bob Feller, Bob Lemon and Early Wynn. He won 20 games in 1951 and 22 in 1952, made the All-Star team three straight years from 1952, and led the league in ERA and shutouts twice each. In 1954 he went 19-8 with a 2.64 ERA for the 111-win pennant winner. His effectiveness faded after 1954, and he finished with the White Sox in 1960 and the Senators in 1961. His career line was 142-97 with a 3.27 ERA and 27 shutouts. He is in the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame but not in Cooperstown.
