1958 Topps #55 Chico Carrasquel

About Chico Carrasquel
Carrasquel's 1958 Topps card, #55, pictures him with the Cleveland Indians and follows his 1957 season, when he hit .276 with 8 home runs and 57 RBI in 125 games, almost all at shortstop. It sits in Series One of a 494-card set, between Norm Siebern at #54 and Bill Fischer at #56. Cleveland traded him to Kansas City for Billy Hunter in June, so the pictured club was short-lived.
Alfonso Carrasquel, born in Caracas in 1926, was the first Venezuelan to become a major league star and a national idol at home. Nephew of Alex Carrasquel, the first Venezuelan in the majors, he was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers, sold to the White Sox, and in 1950 replaced Luke Appling at shortstop, finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting. A slick-fielding four-time All-Star (1951, 1953, 1954, 1955), he was the first Latin American to start an All-Star Game and broke a shortstop record by handling 297 straight chances without an error. He teamed with Nellie Fox on the double play, then played for Cleveland, Kansas City and Baltimore before his last big league game in 1959. He hit .258 with 55 home runs over ten seasons. Back in Venezuela he managed the Leones del Caracas to the 1982 Caribbean Series title, worked as a scout and White Sox Spanish-language broadcaster, and was named to the inaugural Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame class in 2003.
