1958 Topps #20 Gil McDougald

About Gil McDougald
McDougald played 138 games for the Yankees in 1958, mostly at second base, batting .250 with 14 home runs and 65 RBI, and earned an All-Star selection. He hit two home runs in the World Series as New York beat Milwaukee in seven games, and received the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award. His Series 1 card #20 was printed with white lettering, and a second version prints his name in yellow.
Gil McDougald was a San Francisco-born infielder who spent all ten of his major league seasons, 1951 through 1960, with the New York Yankees. A former All-City high school basketball player, he signed with the club in 1948 and rose quickly, learning under Rogers Hornsby at Beaumont before winning the 1951 American League Rookie of the Year award. He hit a World Series grand slam that October, the first by a rookie. Manager Casey Stengel prized his versatility, and McDougald played second base, third base and shortstop, hitting from a splayed, bat-cocked stance that looked odd but worked. He was a five-time All-Star, played on eight American League pennant winners and five World Series champions, and retired with a .276 average, 112 home runs and 576 RBI. His name is also tied to the 1957 line drive that struck Cleveland pitcher Herb Score in the eye. Hearing loss from an earlier batting-practice injury followed him for decades. Later he coached baseball at Fordham and spoke on behalf of hearing organizations.
