1958 Topps #142 Enos Slaughter

About Enos Slaughter
Enos Bradsher "Country" Slaughter (1916-2002) was born in Roxboro, North Carolina, and raised on a family farm, where he earned the nickname "Country." He broke in with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1938 and became known for relentless hustle in right field. A 10-time All-Star, Slaughter batted .300 with 2,383 hits over a 19-season career. He is best remembered for his "Mad Dash" in Game 7 of the 1946 World Series, racing home all the way from first base on a hit by Harry Walker to score the Series-winning run for the Cardinals. Traded to the Yankees in 1954, the veteran won two more championships in New York (1956, 1958) to go with two earlier Cardinals titles (1942, 1946). In 1958, at age 42, he was a reserve on the World Series-champion Yankees. Slaughter was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1985.
