1958 Topps #43 Sal Maglie

About Sal Maglie
Maglie's 1958 was his last season in the majors, split between the Yankees and the Cardinals. He went 3-7 with a 4.72 ERA in 17 games, and the Yankees passed him on to St. Louis. His 1958 Topps card, #43, is in the first series and pictures him with the Yankees.
Sal Maglie was a right-hander from Niagara Falls, New York, known as Sal the Barber for the high inside pitches that seemed to shave batters' chins. A wartime rookie with the Giants in 1945, he jumped to the Mexican League in 1946 and was banned from organized baseball, so he did not return until 1950 and did not pitch a full big-league season until he was 33. He then anchored the Giants staff, going 18-4 in 1950 and tying for the National League lead with 23 wins in 1951, and he was an All-Star in 1951 and 1952. He pitched in the 1951 and 1954 World Series for the Giants and, after joining Brooklyn, in 1956, when he threw a no-hitter against the Phillies. He was the last man to wear the uniforms of the Giants, Dodgers and Yankees. He finished 119-62 with a 3.15 ERA, later coaching for the Red Sox.
