About Eddie Miksis

Miksis opened 1958 with Baltimore, appeared in just three games, and was released on May 15. Two days later the Cincinnati Redlegs signed him as a free agent, and he hit .140 in 69 games there before retiring. His #121 is a Series Two card in the 1958 Topps set of 494 cards, and it pictures him with the Orioles.

Eddie Miksis was a right-handed utility infielder and outfielder from Burlington, New Jersey, who signed with Brooklyn and reached the majors on June 17, 1944, at 17. After Navy service he settled into a backup role behind Eddie Stanky, Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese. In the 1947 World Series he pinch ran at first base in Game 4 and scored the winning run on Cookie Lavagetto's double that broke up Bill Bevens' no-hit bid. Traded to the Chicago Cubs in June 1951 in a deal that sent Andy Pafko to Brooklyn, he became a regular, hitting .265 that year and playing center field in 1955, when he tied Duke Snider for the National League lead in fielding percentage among center fielders. He later passed through the Cardinals, Orioles and Reds and retired after 1958 with a .236 average, 44 home runs and 228 RBI in 1,042 games. He played every infield spot plus the outfield, and never made an All-Star team. Asked for his greatest thrill, he said it was getting paid every two weeks.
