About Jack Harshman

Topps #217 shows Harshman with the Baltimore Orioles, who got him from the White Sox after his 8-8 season of 1957. He went 12-15 with a 2.89 ERA, third best in the American League, and set career highs with 161 strikeouts and 17 complete games despite a bad back. The card is in the third series (#177-264) of the 494-card set.

Jack Harshman, a left-hander from San Diego, began as a slugging first baseman, signing with the local Padres out of high school in 1945 and hitting 36 home runs at Victoria in 1947 and 47 for Nashville in 1951. Nashville owner Larry Gilbert suggested he try pitching, and in 1953 he went 23-7 for the Vols. The White Sox bought his contract, and in 1954 he won 14 games, including a 16-strikeout game at Fenway Park on July 25 that was a White Sox single-game record. He won 15 games in 1956. A back injury in 1957, later found to be a slipped disc, cost him effectiveness, and he was traded to Baltimore in a deal that ended with the commissioner ordering the White Sox to compensate the Orioles. He kept swinging a big bat as a pitcher, hitting 21 major league home runs. After stops with Boston and Cleveland he pitched his last game in 1960. He finished 69-65 with a 3.50 ERA in 217 games, and he died in Georgetown, Texas, in 2013.
