About Joe Durham

Durham spent 1958 in the minors. After the Orioles reacquired Gene Woodling and Dick Williams shortly before Opening Day, he went to Triple-A Vancouver, had his jaw broken by a pitch from Portland's John Buzhardt, and still hit .285 with a club-best 18 homers and 85 RBI in 135 games. His Topps #96, a second-series card showing him with Baltimore, is his rookie card.

Joe Durham, an outfielder from Newport News, Virginia, played parts of three major league seasons: ten games for the 1954 Baltimore Orioles, 77 in 1957, and six for the 1959 St. Louis Cardinals, finishing with a .188 average and five home runs. Before that he starred at Collis P. Huntington High School, played semipro ball, spent 1952 with the Negro American League's Chicago American Giants, and in 1953 helped integrate the Class B Piedmont League with York. In September 1954 he became the first African American to start a game for the Orioles, and days later hit the first home run by a Black player in the club's modern history. Two years of Army service followed. After his playing career he worked for the Orioles for more than a half-century.
