About Joe Ginsberg

Card #67 in the 1958 Topps set, from Series One (#1-88), shows Joe Ginsberg with the Baltimore Orioles. It reports a 1957 season in which he began wearing eyeglasses at manager Paul Richards' suggestion. With Gus Triandos the only other catcher, he got into 85 games, 66 of them behind the plate, and hit a respectable .274 with one home run and 18 RBI.

Joe Ginsberg was a left-handed-hitting catcher who spent 13 seasons in the major leagues between 1948 and 1962, appearing for the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets. Born Myron Nathan Ginsberg in New York City and raised in Detroit, where his father ran a saloon five blocks from Briggs Stadium, he was signed by Tigers scout Wish Egan out of Cooley High School in 1944, spent two years in the Army in the Philippines, and debuted for Detroit in September 1948. He was an everyday catcher only in 1951 and 1952, and it was during that 1952 season, with Detroit buried in last place at 50-104, that he caught the first of Virgil Trucks' two no-hitters. Otherwise he was a backup receiver valued for his batting eye and his handling of pitchers, with a detour to Seattle in 1955 that produced a Pacific Coast League title and Player of the Year honors. He closed out with the 1962 expansion Mets, starting their first home game at the Polo Grounds. Ginsberg, who was Jewish, finished at .241 with 20 home runs and 182 RBIs in 695 games.
