1958 Topps #6 George Zuverink

About George Zuverink
Zuverink's 1958 Topps card, #6, comes from the first series and shows him with the Baltimore Orioles, between Willie Mays at #5 and Dale Long at #7. On the mound he was a reliever again that summer, appearing in 45 games without a start and going 2-2 with a 3.39 earned run average, seven saves and 69 innings.
George Zuverink was a tall, side-arming right-hander from Holland, Michigan, who threw a heavy sinker. After Army Air Corps service in the Pacific, a release by the Cardinals organization and a perfect 13-0 season with the semipro Holland Flying Dutchmen, he worked his way up through Cleveland's system and reached the majors in 1951. He also pitched for Cincinnati and Detroit, starting 25 games for the Tigers in 1954, before settling into a bullpen role with the Baltimore Orioles from 1955. He led the American League in relief appearances in consecutive years, and in 1956 was later recognized as the league's saves leader. His best season was 1957, when he went 10-6 with a 2.48 earned run average in 56 games. He finished in 1959 with a 32-36 record, 3.54 ERA and 40 saves in 265 games. In 1957 he was on the mound for Frank Zupo's debut, and the two formed the only all-Z battery known in big league history.
