1958 Topps #218 Dick Rand

About Dick Rand
Rand's 1958 Topps card, #218 in the third series, pictures him as a Pittsburgh Pirate and is his rookie card. It follows his one season with the club, 1957, when he caught 57 of his 60 games and hit .219. The card is numbered right after Jack Harshman, #217, and just before Camilo Pascual, #219, and it falls two numbers past the St. Louis Cardinals card, #216, the team that first signed him.
Dick Rand was a right-handed-hitting catcher born in South Gate, California, who stood 6 feet 2 inches and weighed 185 pounds. His professional career stretched over twelve seasons, 1949 through 1959 and 1961. Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals, he had two late-season trials with the club, in 1953 and 1955, and started every one of his dozen games behind the plate, collecting 12 hits in 41 at bats. St. Louis traded him to Pittsburgh after the 1956 minor-league season, and in 1957 he backed up starting catcher Hank Foiles, playing in 60 games and starting 34. He hit only .219 that year and went back to the minors for the rest of his active career. In 72 major-league games he batted .240 with 35 hits, two home runs and 13 runs batted in. He died in Moreno Valley, California, in 1996.
