About Buddy Pritchard

Pittsburgh's bonus-rule shortstop had appeared in 23 games the summer before, with one hit in 11 at bats. His 1958 Topps card #151, from the second series, shows him as a Pirate and is a recognised rookie card, though the season itself found him back in the minor leagues.

Harold William Buddy Pritchard was a shortstop and second baseman from South Gate, California, who starred at the University of Southern California, batting .385 in 1956 and earning third-team All-American honors. The Pittsburgh Pirates signed him as a $30,000 bonus baby, outbidding 11 of the other 16 major league clubs. Under the Bonus Rule then in force he had to stay on the big-league roster through 1957, and he played just 23 games with 11 at bats and one hit, a single off Don Newcombe at Forbes Field on May 28. That was his only hit and his only major league season. He then spent eight years in the Pirate farm system, hitting .256, before managing Rookie-level Pittsburgh affiliates and later scouting for the Pirates, Cubs and the Major League Scouting Bureau.
